Matra M530 LX

Behalve bekend als producent van raketten voor de ruimtevaart was Matra (Mécanique Aviation TRAction) ook actief in de autorensport. Zo heeft zij de Franse drie-kleur hooggehouden in de Formule 1 (wereldkampioen van 1969) en in de 24 uur van Le Mans (1972, 1973, 1974). Voor het grote publiek lanceerde Matra op de Salon de Geneve in 1967 de Matra M530, vernoemd naar de R530 raket. De M530 was bedoeld als opvolger van de sportieve Matra-Bonnet Djet (de eerste in serie geproduceerde auto met middenmotor). De Djet was te sportief en te spartaans voor een breed koperspubliek en dus had men de ontwerpafdeling de opdracht gegeven om een sportwagen met meer praktische eigenschappen te ontwerpen, een zogenaamde "Voiture des copains".

De Matra M530 is ontworpen als Grand Tourisme 2+2, en net als zijn voorganger gebouwd op een stalen frame, een polyester body en voorzien van een middenmotor. Dat het ontwerp zeer uitgekiend is blijkt uit dat het feit dat de ontwerpers ondanks de middenmotor toch nog in een achterbankje hadden voorzien. Daarnaast,"past het 2-delige targadak heel elegant in de kofferruimte voor", en dan houd je dus even goed een serieuze kofferruimte achter over voor de bagage...... De 75 pk sterke middenmotor is gezien het relatief lage gewicht van deze bijzondere GT ruim voldoende en samen met de 4 schijfremmen, zeer geschikt voor sportieve ritten.

Deze Matra is recent technisch zeer grondig gereviseerd en vernieuwd. Dat alles met oog voor behoud van de prachtige originaliteit van de auto. Zo is de Matra nummergelijk en elk detail van de auto is nog origineel, zelfs de originel hoes voor de targa panelen is nog aanwezig. (Deze auto is dus niet te vergelijken met andere overgebeleven exemplaren die vaak door vorige eigenaren aangepast zijn met allerhande merkvreemde wisselstukken!)

Dit is een origineel in Nederland geleverde M530 LX van de totaal slechts 4700 gebouwde exemplaren! En wat het pas echt leuk maakt is de jaren-60-modernistische styling die herinneringen oproept aan stripheld Michiel Vaillant en die het "you-love-it-or-hate-it"al lang achter zich heeft gelaten.

Matra M530 LX

Besides being known as a manufacturer of rockets for aerospace, Matra (Mécanique Aviation TRAction) was also active in motor racing. It thus upheld the French three-colour in Formula 1 (1969 world champion) and in the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1972, 1973, 1974). For the general public, Matra launched at the Salon de Geneve in 1967 the Matra M530, named after the R530 rocket. The M530 was meant to be the successor to the sporty Matra-Bonnet Djet (first mass-produced mid-engined car). The Djet was too sporty and spartan for a wide buyer audience and so the design department had been commissioned to design a sports car with more practical features, a so-called ‘Voiture des copains’.

The Matra M530 was designed as a Grand Tourisme 2+2, and like its predecessor, built on a steel frame, a polyester body and fitted with a mid-engine. That the design is very sophisticated is shown by the fact that the designers had provided for a rear seat despite the mid-engine. In addition, ‘the 2-piece targa roof fits very elegantly into the front boot’, and so you are left with just as much serious rear boot space for luggage...... Given the relatively low weight of this particular GT, the 75bhp mid-engine is more than adequate and together with the 4 disc brakes, well suited for sporty drives.

This Matra has recently undergone a very thorough technical overhaul and renewal by us. This with an eye for preserving its originality. For example, the Matra is numbers matching and every detail of the car is still original, even the cover to store the divisible targa roof is still present. (So this car cannot be compared to most of the surviving ones that have been modified by previous owners with all kinds of branded spare parts!)

This is an original M530 LX delivered in the Netherlands out of a total of only 4700, which makes the car unique. And what makes it fun is the 1960s-modernist styling that evokes memories of comic book hero Michiel Vaillant and has long since left the ‘you-love-it-or-hate-it’ behind.
