Description
Ultra rare Cayman 987.2 S for sale
Launched in full crisis, far fewer GEN 2 Cayman's (987.2) were sold than of the first generation (987.1). Moreover, most buyers opted for the base version, resulting in only 8,215 units of the 987.2 Cayman S (incl. R & Black edition) being sold over a five-year period.
By comparison, Porsche sold more than 320,000 cars in 2023 alone…..
However, the GEN 2 987 was noticeably better than the GEN 1. The new generation (S) got modern direct fuel-injection engines which not only were more responsive whilst needing less fuel, they also put an end to the notorious bore-scoring & IMS problems, the Achilles heel of the pre-facelift cars. With the generation change also came the fantastic PDK, which brought the 987.2 S performance into 911 territory.
For instance, the ‘automatic Cayman S was suddenly faster than the manual. With sport chrono, the Cayman S goes to 100km/h in less than 5 sec where the GEN 1 Tiptronic needed more than 6 seconds. A world of difference.
In addition, the GEN 2 allowed you (finally) to order a limited slip differential (LSD). Also the PCM was upgraded significantly.
But what makes the 987 GEN 2 so interesting is in fact that they are even better than it successor. After all, the 987 GEN 2 are the last ones with a hydraulic steering wheel and manual handbrake. A driver’s choice! It still steers better than the (outgoing) 718 !
Moreover, the global crisis had a second consequence. The few people that bought a GEN 2 Cayman S were ordering them with few options.
Not this one! After all, we are talking about a Porsche press-car.
As such, it is packed with all possible options , just to show journalists what was possible now: PDK, LSD, PASM, PCCB, 19-inch wheels, cruise control, Xenon with dynamic cornering lights, PCM3, Bose, adaptive 18-way Sport+ seats with memory, you name it…
As icing on the cake, Speed-Yellow was ticked; as we all know, the best Porsche color ever!
Add to this the full-leather Seeblau interior (difficult to capture on photo with the old iphone) and you have one of the most fantastic (unique?) color combination possible. Why on earth would you want a boring hobby car?
After spending several years with Porsche, the car ended up with an enthusiast who maniacally pampered it. This owner lived close to the renowned RUF workshop where the car has always been serviced. The specialists at RUF also gave him some recommendations which resulted in some upgrades being installed over the years, such as a Borla exhaust, RUF sport kats and BMC air filter complemented by a software update. I completed the look is with the ‘correct’ rims.
Of course, all original parts are still available.
After 15 years, the car is not new, but you will have to look hard to tell the difference.
This Cayman is accident-free and as far as we can find completely in first paint. The color is, considering the car lways sleeps under his pyjamas, is still a vibrant as new.
Check-box:
